Fish Recipes Sundin: "Healthy and Delicious Broiled Freshwater Fish" (Click Images To Enlarge)

image of healthy broiled fish prepared for the table At our house, we have more than a passing interest in finding recipes for cooking fish. We love traditional cooking methods, fried fish for example, are considered an occasionally tasty treat.

These days though, we’re more interested in using healthier, lower calorie recipes. And with family members who have special dietary concerns, recipes that can safely be eaten by everybody in our whole family. The recipe I have to offer you here checks all of those boxes. Delicious, healthy, and best of all, simple to prepare, we think your family will love this one!

You can use this recipe to prepare virtually any freshwater fish species. Where it really shines though, is with some of the more muscular, or “meatier” fleshed species like yellow perch, northern pike, walleye and burbot. Delicate fleshed fish, crappies or bluegills for example, can be used, but take care not to overcook.

Preparing the fish.  Use filleted fish and remove the pin bones that run down the center of the fillet. I split each of our fish fillets into 2 halves. So, each fish yields 4 smaller sized pieces. Scroll down for additional related images.

Broiled Freshwater Fish Recipe

Recipe serves 4 people. Double if necessary to accommodate larger groups.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound fish fillets.
  • 1 Tablespoon cooking oil. Coconut, Avocado, or Olive oil can be used. (We highly recommend using coconut oil because it gives the fish a firm and pleasing “lobster-like” texture.)
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt (optional)
  • Minnesota Fish Seasoning (or substitute dillweed, basil, celery leaf, sesame seed, tarragon or lemon peel)
  • Lemon Pepper

Preparation of Broiled Freshwater Fish

Arrange fillets on bottom of foil pan or foil lined cookie sheet. Baste fillets with warmed, melted butter and oil mixture. Sprinkle fillets with lemon pepper, fish seasoning and light sprinkle of salt.

Place pan in broiler under medium heat. Cooking time varies with thickness of fillets. Typically, 5 to 10 minutes is all you’ll need. Remove fish when they are flaky and take care not to overcook.
